How to choose, clean and care for
the rare noble metal that Joburg was founded on
Of all the world's precious metal, only gold combines the
four basic characteristics – beauty, rarity, durability
and ease of workability – that make it a universally
and eternally treasured commodity. The beauty of gold is easy
to define. Gold has a naturally intense colour and a distinctive
lustre which is further enhanced by combining it with small
amounts of other metals. Its rarity is due to the fact that
gold is difficult and expensive to mine. Gold doesn't rust,
tarnish or corrode, making it durable enough to last virtually
forever. It has the best working qualities of any metal. Although
pure gold is actually yellow, it can be made into a variety
of colours through a process called alloying. Alloying involves
changing the types and proportions of metals mixed with yellow
gold. The only exceptions to this are 22ct and 24ct gold which
are always yellow. In the UK, rose coloured gold is becoming
increasingly popular. When choosing, take into consideration
your skin tone and the clothes you are wearing. Many people
prefer to wear yellow gold with cream, camel and rust colours.
A combination of yellow, white or rose gold – two- or
three-toned gold – makes for very versatile jewellery.
